A Driver crushes two to death, Injures seven and escapes the scene ...photo

Two persons lost their lives while seven others were injured in an auto crash which occurred in front of the abandoned Gateway Hotel, Ota, in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Saturday around 6.10am.

It was gathered that those who died were crushed to death in the accident which involved two trucks, that were travelling to Lagos.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said one of the trucks with number plate, KJA 113 XR, while descending the slope in the axis rammed into a broken down vehicle With plate number, EKY 653 XB.

He explained that some hoodlums in the area had gathered around the first truck, trying to extort money from the driver, when the second truck had a brake failure and rammed into the truck from behind.

He said, “When this happened, the hoodlums moved from the first truck and went to the second one, and wanted to extort money from the driver, who had been injured due to the impact of the accident.

“But in the process, an oncoming commercial bus painted in Lagos colour allegedly crushed two of the hoodlums to death instantly and injured seven others with one of them in a critical condition.

“The commercial bus driver sped off the scene immediately and our operatives could not apprehend him or capture its number plate.”

Akinbiyi said the corpses of the deceased had been deposited at the state General Hospital, Ifo, while the injured were receiving medical attention at Ojugbele Hospital at Ota.

Italian Bridge collapses on busy road in Lecco ...photo

One man has been killed and five other people have been injured in Italy after a bridge collapsed over a busy road.

The bridge, in Lecco province near Milan, fell when a heavy goods vehicle was crossing, crushing cars below.

The company which runs Italy's main roads has blamed local authorities, saying it had demanded the immediate closure of the bridge hours before Friday's accident.

A preliminary criminal investigation has been opened.

The accident occurred around 17:20 (15:20 GMT) as an articulated lorry carrying a specially authorised heavy weight (108 tonnes) was using the bridge.

At least four other cars were involved in the accident - one was completely crushed underneath the fallen bridge.

Anas, Italy's road authority, insisted it had asked for the bridge to be closed at about 14:00 after one of its workers spotted problems.

It said Lecco province officials had demanded the information in writing - which required a formal inspection of the site. However, the bridge had collapsed before an inspector could reach it.

Lecco authorities have denied Anas's version of events.

Indications have emerged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was intensifying moves to gather evidence against former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, to begin her prosecution.

A top operative of the commission said the leadership of the commission had initiated a discreet probe of the former First Lady in a bid to assemble evidence against her in the event of her prosecution as a fallout of the commission’s decision to freeze $20m traced to her.

The commission had assembled a team of detectives saddled with the responsibility of identifying all houses and property belonging to the former First Lady.

According to The Punch, it was stated that operatives had been instructed from the chairman's office to mark such houses and property as part of the preparation for her prosecution.

It was further stated that the operatives were focusing attention on property in Abuja, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt and other cities in the country.

The source said, “It would not be correct to conclude that the commission has halted the investigation into the activities of the former First Lady. The investigation is progressing and it is being handled by the office of the chairman of the commission.

“A team of operatives has been assembled to identify all her properties in the country with a focus on Abuja, Port Harcourt and Yenagoa. The responsibility of the team is to mark all such properties in preparation for a possible court action.”

You’ve been married for so long, and you’re also in the limelight; how have you managed to keep your relationship intact for all these years? There’s a lot of pressure on young couples and I’m very jealous of you,” Tiwa said right on stage.

Comedian Seyi Law reveals what he did with wife after loosing their first child...

In a chat with Saturday Beats, Seyi Law has explained how he took care of his wife when they lost their first child. According to the comedian, it was tough, but God saw them through. He also said he has had people call him impotent several times, but he is glad that has now been corrected. The comedian who just welcomed a baby girl said;

“The fact that we lost a child was very tough. Sometimes when you post something on the social media, people wonder why you bring your family issue to the social media. What they do not know is that you just want some words of encouragement. Sometimes you really cannot control the way bad news spreads. I have heard people say things like I cannot get a woman pregnant. When the news came out that I lost my child, it was more like a confirmation that I am a man. But by the special grace of God, I have another child now. What made that very painful was the fact that when we lost the baby, I did not know what to tell my wife and how to console her and that was a very difficult time for me. I needed to rely on the words of encouragement from people to stay strong for both myself and my wife.”  Continue...

About helping his wife stay strong, he said;

“One of the things I did was to take a lot of vacation and I spent more time with my wife. We went to different places. We travelled out of the country and visited several interesting places. I gave my wife constant reassurance that she is the mother of my children. There was a Mother’s Day celebration where we took a trip to a resort and I told her that I was celebrating Mother’s Day with the mother of my children. This was to encourage her and the fact that she is also a strong person helped. I think she is even stronger than I am in the sense that you cannot get into a woman’s heart but a woman that goes through such pain and still goes into the kitchen to prepare food for her husband says a lot. You see her smiling and the love and affection she showed me gave me no other choice but to be strong. I think I am the emotional one between us. I also tried to keep the memory of the lost child away from her. I made sure we did not have the picture of the baby and I tried to also watch her at night to ensure that she was not crying because I knew that was when something like that could happen,” said Seyi Law.

Speaking about their new bundle of joy, he said;

“I am very excited that I am a proud father. I remember that one day in my church, they were doing a programme tagged, ‘Parenting in the 21st century’. When I was telling someone about it, I said that the programme was for parents like us. The excitement is so much and I am very happy about it. I am grateful to God and I cannot quantify my joy.”

Northern Groups caution Buhari over feud with Bola Tinubu

Northern socio-cultural and political groups have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to avoid unnecessary feud with National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, which they described as capable of destroying the ruling party.

This, they said, had become imperative because of the insinuation that Buhari and Tinubu are not in very good terms even though none of them has publicly admitted it.

Political analysts have also linked the recent disagreement between Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to the purported crisis between the former Governor of Lagos State and the President.

Speaking to The Punch, the groups noted that the speculated crisis between the two titans of the ruling party should be resolved.

Chairman, Coalition of Political Parties in Kaduna State, Muhammadu Sani-Ahmed, blamed those he described as “kitchen cabinet” of the President for the seeming feud between Buhari and Tinubu.

He said there was no hiding the fact that there is no love lost between the two leaders.

On the pages of newspapers, the two leaders have consistently denied any feud; but somebody close to them has told me there is a crisis between them,” he said.

Sani-Ahmed noted that with the pivotal role played by Tinubu during the 2015 presidential election, there was a need for the two leaders to come together and settle their differences.

He said, “Nigerians are not stupid. Even the blind knows that the relationship between the President and the National Leader of APC is not cordial.

“This feud is being fuelled by those close to the President. They are telling the President the wrong things. The President and Tinubu must come together regardless of their differences to settle their rift before the 2019 elections because if it continues like this till that time, it will certainly affect the chances of the APC.”

Second Republic Member of the House of Representatives and also the Convener, Coalition of Northern Intellectuals, Politicians and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, called on Buhari to apply caution in his handling of the alleged feud with Tinubu and the internal crisis in the APC.

He said, “Given the tenuous nature of this administration, the party (APC) and of course, the powerful enemies undoubtedly which Tinubu has, he (Buhari) should do well to please take it easy. Some of us believe that he (Tinubu) certainly has done some good for the party, Buhari as a person, and for the country; we would not want him to fall by the wayside as a result of lack of tact.

“I also believe that he (Tinubu), Buhari and leading members of the party must all rush back to the drawing board because rightly or wrongly, their making Buhari as the presidential candidate and his arrogance and megalomania may in fact, sooner than later, destroy the party.

“And to make matters worse, Buhari does not have a clue about forming a party or running one. If care is not taken, he will throw the party into complete disarray and by the time most of them in the party realise it, it would have been too late."

Drug trafficking former Navy Chief asks the President for his job back

A former Guinea-Bissau navy chief who was convicted in the US of drug trafficking has asked the president if he can resume his military career, reports the AFP news agency.

"I have returned from a trip which took me away from the country for three years. It's normal that on my return that I come and see the armed forces' commander in chief," Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto told reporters.

He was captured off the West African coast by US agents in 2013.

The indictment against him said he and two others were middlemen in a huge drug-smuggling operation which transported cocaine by vessel from South America to Guinea-Bissau, and then to store the cocaine in Guinea-Bissau before its shipment to other locations, including the United States.

Na Tchuto pleaded guilty at his trial in May 2014 and was detained in the US until his sentencing on 4 October.

He was sentenced to four years in jail by a New York federal court this month but was released for time already served and has returned home, the agency adds.

Man kills FRSC Official over delay in promised assistance ...photo

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a former Federal Road Safety Corps member, who killed an official of the FRSC in Oyo town.

The suspect, Nurudeen Alin (32), and his accomplice, Mohammed Garba (26), went to the residence of their victim, Yahuza Fakai, at College Road, Amejiogbe area of Oyo town and stabbed him with a knife several times.

The state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters in Ibadan, said investigation revealed that Ali was dismissed from the FRSC for driving licence touting offence, stating also that the victim had on many occasions supported Ali with money after he lost his job.

He said, “The victim and Ali were friends and after Ali was dismissed, he got a lot of financial help from Fakai. On October 14 this year, Ali and an accomplice, Garba, went to Fakai’s house and stabbed him to death. The Atiba police division was mandated to unravel the murder, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The murder weapon, a knife, was recovered from them.”

Ali, who confessed to the crime during an interview with correspondents, said his late friend had promised to give him some money but delayed in doing so, which was what made him angry and attacked him.

“Fakai was my friend because we worked together at FRSC before I was dismissed. He had been helping me until I killed him. A day before he was killed, he called me and gave me some money. He also said that I should see him again for more money. I went to his house with Garba but when we got there, I needed to receive a call and stepped out, by the time I returned to the house, Garba had stabbed him in the neck. He handed the knife to me and I also stabbed him. We left him for dead. I was later arrested in my house by the police,” said the suspect.

Giving the account of his involvement in the crime, Garba said the deceased had promised to assist Ali but delayed the assistance after learning that he was hugely indebted.

He said, “Our aim was to threaten him with the knife so that he could release the money but after stabbing him in the neck, I realised that the injury was life threatening so I left the scene because I was afraid. Ali stabbed him more leading to his death. I had never met the deceased before that day.”

Those new emails were discovered during an FBI investigation in which the devices of former Congressman Anthony Weiner and Clinton aide Huma Abedin were seized, NBC News confirmed.

While examining Weiner's laptop, investigators discovered Abedin also used the laptop, which contained some emails between Abedin and Clinton.

"In previous congressional testimony, I referred to the fact that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had completed its investigation of former Secretary Clinton's personal email server. Due to recent developments, I am writing to supplement my previous testimony," Comey wrote.

"In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation. I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation," he added.

Meet Kidnappers who release victims and abduct those who came to drop ransom ...photo

For members of a notorious kidnap gang operating in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, nothing could go wrong, but Wednesday, October 12, 2016 was the day the long arm of the law caught up with them.

The nine members of the gang, who were apprehended by the operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team in a five-hour raid that day, said they were so efficient in their criminal operations that they once kidnapped four victims on the same day.

The afternoon raid led to the arrest of Daniel Gabriel (33), Alaso Igodo (25), Akeodi Aselemi (34), Ayibinmotei Livinus (25), Anikuroka Marshal (33), Biebele Elijah (34) Efiye Anda (34), Daniel Lessor (31) and Isaac Reuben (27), all living within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

The police said the gang was responsible for most of the kidnappings that took place within GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt, Borokiri General Area and YKC axis of Woji in Rivers State.

Saturday Punch learnt that the string of events which led to the apprehension of the nine suspects started with the abduction of a woman identified as Mrs. Okotie, who was kidnapped few weeks ago opposite the Royal House of Grace Church in Port Harcourt.

The gang was said to have abducted her in the Mazda car they used as operational vehicle.

The victim told the police that she had told the suspects that she was not feeling fine but they did not listen to her.

Fortunately for Mrs. Okotie, the car broke down along the way and the leader of the gang named Blackie, called for another vehicle, a Nissan Primera, which arrived shortly after.

“But they did not know that we had got information about them. They were on their way to the Ornage Waterside when we intercepted them. As soon as they saw us, they fled and abandoned the woman in the car along with one of their rifles,” the source said.

Few days after the botched kidnapping of Mrs. Okotie, IRT operatives who were following up on a lead, arrested Gabriel, a taxi driver, around 2.pm on October 12.

When Gabriel, an Akwa-Ibom indigene living at Navy Market Borikiri, Port-Harcourt was taken in for questioning, he confessed that he had personally been involved in 15 kidnaps in the last few months in the state.

He then led the police to his house where five members of the gang were already planning another kidnap.

“When we got to his house, we arrested five of his gang members and from there, we proceeded to Enugu Waterfront where we arrested Anikuroka Marshal, the gang’s armourer.   The suspects also identified Diobele Elijah and Akodi Aselemi as their spies who go around town scouting for victims.  They confessed to have three AK47 rifles, two pistols, which they use in their operations,” a police source said.

Saturday Punch learnt that in one of the kidnaps carried out by the gang, on August 10, 2016, a pastor, Mrs. Luis Ubah and one Mr. Chika Ezenwa were abducted. The same day, the gang kidnapped a business woman, Mrs. Ubah in her store, they also grabbed another victim identified as Ezenwa who was with Ubah at the time.

The four victims were taken by the gang to the Indoki Estate Waterfront.

The source explained that while on their way to the waterfront, the gang encountered a police team and instantly opened fire on the policemen.

“Inspector David Ijosi and one Corporal Dike Ledee were injured by bullets in the attack. One was hit in the leg while another was hit in the neck and the kidnappers escaped into the Isaka creeks in Okrika,” the source said.

Soon after, the gang made contact with Ubah’s husband, Bishop Prince Ubah, from whom they demanded a N50m ransom for her freedom.

During the ensuing negotiation, the ransom for the release of the bishop’s wife was reduced to N2.8m and a place was agreed on for the family to drop the ransom.

But in a dramatic turn of events, when two brothers of the bishop, Onyeka Ani and Pastor Okezie Akara, took the money to the agreed place on August 25, 2016, 15 days after Mrs. Ubah was kidnapped, the gang members decided to release her along with Ezenwa but kidnapped the two brothers instead.

The police said they then demanded another N1m ransom from the bishop for his brothers. But N750, 000 was eventually paid for their release.

Police investigation also showed that in August 2016, the gang kidnapped one Nkechi at YKC Junction in Woji Town, Port Harcourt, and she was transported to the Woji Waterfront where they ferried her by speedboat to Kula community in Akukotoru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The woman was reportedly kept in captivity for two weeks and was released after a ransom of N2m was paid by her family.

In September, a victim identified as Coachie, who was abducted around Number One Stadium, Port Harcourt, was released after a ransom of N2.5m was paid.

In his statement, Gabriel explained that he came to Port Harcourt in 2015 and worked as a taxi driver but when things became difficult for him, he moved his family back home and joined his first kidnapping gang.

According to him, he had no idea what happened to his car, which he converted from a taxi cab to the gang’s operational vehicle.

“When we were intercepted by the police that day, we left one gun in the car while escaping while Blackie escaped with one other rifle. He gave it to one of our boys, who normally kept our rifles. But after I was arrested, I took the police to the boy and they recovered the rifle and my cab,” he said.

However, in his confessional statement, Anda, a speed boat operator, said he got N200,000  each time he ferried the kidnappers and their victims to their camps across the river in his speed boat.

The suspect, a Bayelsa State indigene, said he was involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft before the military destroyed the camps in which they “cook” the oil, referring to the numerous makeshift oil refineries that dot creeks where oil militants operate in the country.

Marshal (the gang’s armourer) on the other hand, said he was paid N40,000 per each operation.

The suspect, who is an indigene of Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, said he usually kept the guns in an abandoned bus parked inside the Baptist Church field in Borokiri.

“I did not usually go out with them for the operations. My job is to keep the guns,” he said.

Another suspect, Elijah, a native of Okrika in Rivers State, said he was lured to the gang by his boss, whom he identified as Elvis.

According to him, his role was to assist Elvis to monitor the movement of their targets.

“There was a time I followed Elvis three times to spy on a woman we wanted to kidnap. We could not carry out the operation because our leader, Blackie did not come on time. I was also with him in GRA where we kidnapped the woman who was rescued by the police. Elvis had only been giving me little money since I started working with him. But he loved to buy me a lot of drinks,” he said.

The police said investigation on the scale of the operations of the gang was still on and that they were making efforts to arrest other members of the gang who are now underground.

Obanikoro refunds N100m to EFCC

The detained former Minister of State for Defence, Sen.Musiliu Obanikoro, has refunded the sum of N100m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

A top associate of the former minister, who confided in  Punch correspondent, noted that the former minister had yet to be released after the payment of the N100m as of the time of filing this report by 9pm on Friday.

The EFCC had given a bail condition to Obanikoro, who has been in custody since October 21, 2016, to refund the sum of N100m as a major condition for his bail.

In his statement to the commission, Obanikoro had said that he paid the sum of N2.3bn to the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and another N1.7bn to Sen. Iyiola Omisore.

However, the commission was said to have questioned his claim that N785m of the N4.7bn traced to Silva McNamara, was spent on the campaign against Boko Haram in Lagos and other parts of the South-West.

He had said that N200m was spent on surveillance activities and another N200m and N385m on operations under the supervision of Silva McNamara, a company in which, the commission says, he has interest.

Wow! 6 yr old boy regains smile after losing all his teeth... photo

Six year old Ryan Coutinho wasn't used to smiling. He felt embarrassed after losing almost all his teeth at the age of three.

Now he does. And can't stop showing it.

But getting here wasn't easy, says dentist Amanda Mattos.

The boy lives in a rural area near Guajeru, a poor town in north-eastern Brazil. He had his teeth pulled out as a result of early cavities. Only a few on his lower arch remained.

Ms Mattos, 25, met Ryan for the first time two years ago, during a social project at the boy's school.

"I had never seen something like this," she told the BBC. Ryan's teacher told her that he avoided smiling and did not engage much with other students.

Ms Mattos offered to treat the boy after contacting the boy's mother through the teacher. But the mother refused, believing that her son would be reliving the drama of his operation.

"They are all very modest, live outside the town and didn't understand the procedures," the dentist said. "They were still shaken by the process that removed all his teeth."

Ryan's story could have ended here. But two years later, by coincidence, his mother got a job as a cleaner at the public clinic where Ms Mattos works.

Soon afterwards, the boy had a pain in one of his remaining teeth. He went to the clinic for treatment and met Ms Mattos again.
"I asked him what he wanted. He smiled and said: 'a smile like my friends'," the dentist said.
The mother was still reluctant to accept the treatment. But she later talked to the father and they finally agreed to take up the offer.
The town's public health service did not pay for the procedure, so Ms Mattos, who owns a private
clinic in a nearby town, brought equipment and offered to do it for free.
For several weeks, Ryan visited her after school to take X-rays and impressions. He was disappointed every time he returned home without his new teeth, Ms Mattos said.

Then, on 14 October, two days after Brazil's Children's Day, he finally got a new smile - a denture for his upper arch.

"We all cried. It was very moving," the dentist said.
