Man shot dead by Police officer in Lagos, protesters dispersed

A young Nigerian man identified as Azubuike, was reportedly shot dead by a Police Officerin Lagos. According to Twitter user @Jastobarbz who shared the story, a peaceful protest was organized, however the protesters were dispersed by an RRS (Rapid Response Squad) team.Here’s his tweet;

Attention!!! It’s crazy how unsafe the people are in the hands of our officers Pako police station (Amukoko) in the ajeromi ifelodun shot this man Azubike for no reason and a peaceful protest was held but as usual RRS were brought to chase the people.

However it has been gathered that three policemen attached to Amukoko Division by names and service numbers: 25759 Sgt. Osaseri Saturday, 35 9075 Sgt. Segun Okun, 496833 Cpl. Adekunle Oluwarotimi have also been tried and dismissed from the Nigeria Police over the incident for breaching the rules of engagement to wit reckless application of firearms.

In the incident which occurred on 11/01/2018 at about 2130 hours, at Ifelodun street, Amukoko, Lagos state, the Police officers reportedly fired bullets from their weapons at some youths alleged to have hurled some non ballistic missiles at them such as stones, sticks and bottles leading to the death of one of the youths, Azubike, and injury one another.

The guilty verdict was passed on them by the Adjudicating officer who considered that the officers did not appreciate the situation critically and ought not to have applied the maximum force on the unruly youths.

The arrested officers will be charged to court next week, as Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, has directed all the Area Commanders and DPOs in Lagos state to warn their men against misapplication of force. According to the CP, He further warned that officers must abide by the Rules of Engagement ( ROE) as stipulated in Force Order 237.

The officers casefile would be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution( DPP) for legal advice.
