NSCDC arrests grandmum for allegedly burning the hands of her 9-year old granddaughter in Osun State

NSCDC arrests grandmum for allegedly burning the hands of her 9-year old granddaughter?in Osun StateThe Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State has arrested one Victoria John for allegedly burning the hand of her nine-year-old granddaughter for stealing.

According to reports, the suspect was arrested after teachers of the minor who is a Primary Three pupil in one of the public schools discovered that she could not write in class.  One of the teachers said the pupil was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment where the NSCDC operatives were informed about the incident.

Reacting to the allegations, Mrs John, however, denied knowledge of her granddaughter’s age, saying the girl and her twin brother lost their mother during birth.  She claimed she had been taking good care of the twins after they were retrieved from a motherless home in Jaleyemi, Osogbo, the state capital.  “Their mother was my daughter,” the suspect said.

“She got pregnant and the man ran away, but I took care of her and when she had complications at childbirth she died. I have been taking good care of these children and what happened is only a mistake. I was only trying to correct the children. They usually steal, and I have been warning them to stop stealing. This money that was stolen is N6000 naira and it is the church money that was put in my care. I only put her hand in the fire because I was angry that the twins lied that they did not steal the money. Please forgive me, it is the devil that pushed me to do it,” Mrs John lamented.

The young girl, on her part, denied taking the said amount but claimed she only took N500 with which she bought an exercise book, bread and pencil. She further called on well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid as the hand needed medical attention. The NSCDC said the matter would be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation.
