80-Year-Old Tortoise Hatches A Tiny Baby. But This Mom Has Another HUGE Surprise…

Meet Nigrita, an 80-year-old Galapagos tortoise that laid her first eggs this year! While 80 years might seem quite a bit late in life for us to be having babies, Galapagos tortoises can live to be over 150 years old. In other words, Nigrita is in her prime for reproducing.
Sadly, Galapagos tortoises are on the list of endangered species and that’s why Nigrita lives at Zoo Zürich on Switzerland. She’s part of a special breeding program to help ensure the survival of her species. While it would have been fantastic if Nigrita gave birth to one healthy baby, she ended up with nine adorable hatchlings!

Way to go, Nigrita!tort4
Galapagos Tortoises are endangered because humans who first traveled to the Galapagos Islands realized that their meat was ideal for extended boat travel. Humans also introduced animals to the environment, and these animals acquired a taste for tortoise eggs.tort3
