Deadly Indian Covid-19 Variant Already In Nigeria, But No One Is Telling Us - Prof. Oyewale Tomori

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic which started from Wuhan, China towards the end of the year 2019, the world has never remained the same in terms of social relationships. It can be recalled that at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, countries went into lockdown, shutting down businesses, offices, and as well as closing borders to foreign travellers in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

The Covid-19 pandemic which started at a time when there was no known drug or vaccine that is potent enough to prevent further spread of the virus, saw nations and economies crumbling and struggling for survival. Few months later, when it appeared like vaccines have been discovered which could help the world win the battle against the pandemic, new variants began to emerge in different countrie.

First, it was the United Kingdom's variant, followed by the South African variant of the Covid-19 virus. These variations have undoubtedly made the fight against the pandemic to become a difficult one. This is due to the fact that the new variants are more deadly than the one that originated from Wuhan, China.

The recent report about second wave of Covid-19 with a variant of the virus which has killed many people in India has become a source of concern for the global community. This is due to how fast the virus can spread, and the associated difficulties in containing its spread. It is on record that India is one of the leading nations in terms of vaccine production, but the country's Covid-19 Variant seems to have defied the existing vaccines as many people have continued to die in the country due lack of Oxygen

The situation of things in India in the face of the second wave of Covid-19 in the country, has made other countries to become wary of the Indian variant of Covid-19 virus. This can be argued to be one of the reasons the Federal Government of Nigeria recently announced Phase IV lockdown to avoid another wave of the pandemic. However, according Leadership Newspaper, Professor Oyewale Tomori has alleged that the Indian Covid-19 variant is already in Nigeria, but no one is telling us.

The report which can be accessed at www.leadership.ng equally alleged that cases of the Indian Covid-19 Variant have been recorded in Osun and Edo states respectively. This is indeed, something that must not be taken lightly as further spread of the variant could spell doom for the country. Therefore, we should always ensure that we abide by the Covid-19 Safety Protocols at all times.
