A man was arrested on a charge of smuggling after allegedly stuffing numerous live birds under his pants in an attempt to take with him out of the country, police in Vietnam said.
Customs officials at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, arrested the passenger, who was not identified, after being caught with 18 live birds under his pants.
An addition to having birds underneath his pants, the suspect had birds in his luggage. The man was heading to Taiwan.
The Tropical Biology Institute confirmed that 11 of the birds are of a protected species such as white-rumped Shamas, Oriental Shamas, and Melodious Laughingthrush.
The smuggler managed to restrict the birds by putting them in custom made pouches, which he taped to his legs underneath his pants.
