Pastor Augustine Afolabi Adeniyi is the General Overseer of Christ Apostolic Church, Egbe, Ikotun, Lagos. He spoke to Sunday Vanguard on how he became a minister of God.
Establishing church seems to have become an all-comers affair.  How did your own start?
Christ Apostolic Church, Myriad of Miracle was planted in 1986. And we started the second service on  October 2, 1986. I have been in the ministry since 1967. I started as a member and I was ordained as an elder. While I was an elder, I was working in the Ministry of Federal Ministry of Commerce, former Ministry of Trade.
It wasn’t my wish to become a pastor. My intention was to travel abroad and you knowI had an encounter with the devil. It was a serious encounter. I visited so many hospitals. The last place was University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and they could not cure the sickness. As a result of that, I went to a herbalist, they still couldn’t cure it until finally when somebody introduced me to CAC in 1967.

Panama Papers palaver

Once again, the world was confronted with a massive leak of supposedly confidential information of how the rich, the corrupt, and the shady people hoard their nuts. Alamieyeseigha’ll get solemn but heroic burial – Bayelsa

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha
As the funeral rites for the late former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, begins on Thursday (today), in Yenegoa, the government has promised that he will be given a solemn but heroic state burial.
A former Commissioner for Information, who now heads the Publicity Sub-Committee of the burial committee, Esueme Dan-Kikile, said Alamieyeseigha, would get a state burial befitting of a hero of Ijaw nation.
He said Alamieyeseigha would not  be buried at the Ijaw Heroes Park like the late Gen. Owoeye Azazi and Isaac Adaka Boro.
Nevertheless, Dan-Kikile noted that Governor Seriake Dickson had put in place all things within his powers to accord the first civilian governor of the state a befitting burial beginning from Thursday.
He said, “It is not that government will not be happy to bury him there (Ijaw Heroes Park) but we are also taking into consideration the interest of the family and the community.
“It was in the course of this that the state governor set up the burial committee to be headed by the Deputy Governor of the state, John Jonah, to oversee preparation, planning and logistics for the state burial of Alamieyeseigha.
“We have been working and since November 2015, we are expecting a befitting burial, a wonderful crowd at all the venues that activities will take place.
“We are not only having the burial alone, we are also going to have some intellectual activities. We are having a lecture on ‘Federalism and developments in Nigeria’, to be delivered by Prof. G.G Darah, who is  one of the finest scholars from this part of the country.
“There is also a night of tributes and we are expecting dignitaries from all over the country who will come and pay their last respects to him in comments, speeches,  songs, poems, poetry and many others.”
He said the state government had made sure that all necessary logistics were put in place to have a successful burial, stressing that the burial was not just for the Bayelsa Government but for all Nigerians.
He said Alamieyeseigha meant so much to Bayelsans, noting that he was a leader of both the leaders and the commoners.
He extolled the virtues of Alamieyeseigha, who during his heyday, was described as the Governor-General of the Ijaw nation,  saying that Alamieyeseigha was passionate about Bayelsa, the Ijaw nation and Nigeria.
He added, “He had his own human failings but he was undoubtedly committed to the development of this part of the country, particularly the Niger Delta region.
“He stood for those things that are in accord to the development of the region and so the state government is not only putting in place the best thing in place to make sure he gets a befitting burial but also a successful one.”

Manslaughter: Ibinabo Fiberesima gets N2m bail

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal on Thursday granted a N2m bail to embattled ex-beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima, who was sentenced to five years imprisonment for manslaughter.
The appellate court, in a two-one split judgment, decided that Fiberesima’s application for bail had merit.
Justice Samuel Oseji, who read the lead judgment, granted the N2m bail Fiberesima with two sureties in like sum.
The court said the two sureties must be resident in Lagos and must each swear to an affidavit of means.
Justice Oseji said he was inclined to exercise discretion in Fiberesima’s favour in view of her health and because there was no record that she had jumped bail in the past.
The judge said it would amount to injustice if after Fiberesima had been kept in prison, the Supreme Court later, after about three to four years, decided that the five year jail term imposed on her should be set aside.
Justice Sidi Bage, who presided over the proceedings, aligned himself with the lead judgment but the third member of the panel, Justice Y.B. Nimpar, dissented.
Justice Nimpar said the ill health grounds upon which Fiberesima anchored her application for bail was untenable.
The judge noted that there was no record before the court that Fiberesima had suffered any complication since February that she underwent surgery for breast cancer and April when she brought her application for bail.
Besides, Justice Nimpar said there were adequate medical facilities in the prison to cater to her health needs, adding that the prison hospital could also give her referral for consultancy in the event that she has any condition that could not be taken care by the prison hospital.
“The surgery was uneventful. The surgery was done in February, now we are here in April and there is no complication.
“The applicant is already convicted and presumption of innocence is no longer available.
“I personally will not exercise discretion in favour of the applicant,” Justice Nimpar held.
In support of Fiberesima’s bail application filed through her lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechina, one Victor Eden had deposed to a six-paragraph affidavit stating that Fiberesima recently had a surgical operation for breast cancer.
Eden said in the affidavit that Fiberesima was afraid that her life might be endangered if kept in the prison custody.
He had urged the court to grant her bail in the interest of justice.
Fiberesima was in 2009 convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years imprisonment by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of a Lagos State High court.
The judge had held  that her reckless driving was responsible for an auto crash, which claimed the life of one Dr. Giwa Suraj on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
While sentencing actress to five years imprisonment, Justice Oluwayemi overruled the decision of a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court which earlier ordered her to pay N100,000 for the offence.
Not pleased with the judgment, Fiberesima, through her lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechina, approached the Court of Appeal, seeking to upturn the judgment.
But in a judgment on March 11, 2016, the Court of Appeal dismissed her appeal and upheld the five years imprisonment imposed on her.
Again, not pleased she further appealed to the Supreme Court and urged the Court of Appeal to grant her bail pending the decision of the apex court.

Olubadan-in-council places Eze Ndigbo under Baales

Pic shows Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji receiving his staff of office from Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state while His Oloris looks on .PxDare FasubeIbadan—IN order to stop the royal battle among three contenders for the Eze Ndigbo of Ibadanland and Oyo State, the Olubadan-in-council led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1, has said henceforth holders of the title should subject themselves to the authority of the community leaders in their vicinity. The presentation of Staff of Office to the new Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji was held at Mapo Hall foreground on Friday. Pic shows Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji receiving his staff of office from Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state while His Oloris looks on .PxDare Fasube As a result of the new arrangement, the claimants of the titles of Eze Ndigbo of Ibadanland, and the Onye Ndu Ndigbo are now placed under the Baale of Ekotedo, Elder Taiye Ayorinde. Dr. Alex Anozie and Chief Alloy Obi are laying claims to Eze Ndigbo and Onye Ndu respectively and this has resulted into litigation. In attendance at the meeting were the Otun Olubadan, Chief Lekan Balogun; Osi Olubadan, Chief Rashidi Ladoja; the Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Dr. Olufemi Olaifa; Osi Balogun, Chief Tajudeen Ajibola; Ashipa Olubadan, Chief Eddy Oyewole; Ekerin Olubadan, Chief Abiodun Kola-Daisi and many others. While speaking with newsmen, the Osi Balogun, Chief Tajudeen Ajibola, who spoke on behalf of the council said: “In any community, you cannot have two royal fathers. The only king of Ibadan is our royal father, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I; no other person can call himself his royal highness in Ibadan. We have three levels in the traditional institution in Ibadan. We have the Olubadan, his high chiefs and the Baales. These are the three levels we have. So, no other person can force himself to be royal highness without falling into any of the three levels.” ”So, the heads of clubs, associations and so on fall under the Baale in that domain. The Eze Ndigbo falls under the Baale of Ekotedo. Anything they have to do, they cannot come directly to the Kabiyesi, they have to go through the Baale, who reports to the Olubadan or the Olubadan-in-Council. ”The council reiterated its earlier decision that it would not regard holders of titles as chiefs in Ibadanland. “We are not bordered about whatever title they are called. They are not our royal highness and they are not our Baale. We don’t recognise them.”

FAYOSE vs ALUKO: Aluko and I prostrated while begging Fayose — Olugbemi

Olugbemi-Fayose-AlukoImmediate past Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dele Olugbemi yesterday debunked Dr Tope Aluko’s claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose stage-managed the reconciliatory meeting he held with the embattled former Secretary of state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Olugbemi-Fayose-Aluko Olugbemi said he took Aluko to  Fayose on Sunday, saying; “It was a lie that Governor Fayose stage-managed the reconciliatory meeting,” adding that himself, and Aluko prostrated for the governor three times while begging that Aluko be forgiven.” But in a swift response, Aluko said, “It is all lies. It is part of the plot to sustain the propaganda against me. Olugbemi is an appointee of the governor in the State Universal Basic Education Board. So, he is doing the bid of his master. “I only saw him when he barged into the meeting with the governor. I didn’t have any discussion with him and couldn’t have gone with him to the meeting. He is only being used.” Olugbemi, who said he was surprised that Aluko could address the press to deny that he willingly attended the Sunday night meeting with Governor Fayose and that he spoke to the press under duress after the meeting, disclosing that he, out of genuine concern for peace took Aluko to Eko Hotel, Lagos venue of the meeting. He said; “The existing cordial relationship between Aluko and myself brought us to a discussion that eventually led to the last Sunday April 3, 2016 meeting.” The former speaker said Aluko cannot deny that he re-affirmed that Governor Fayose remained his mentor and father, that all his previous actions were the devil’s work, and that he was under spiritual attack when he said all those things against the governor. “Even when the Governor told him to sit down, he prostrated and I also prostrated along with him to beg the governor for  forgiveness. “The Governor asked Aluko four questions: Whether he knew the implication of his coming to him; why he behaved in that manner; how old he was; and whether he wanted the reconciliation to be total or partial and he (Aluko) replied that he knew the consequence of coming to him and that if he did not want total reconciliation, he would not come to see the governor. “At this point, Aluko stood up again, saying my mentor, my leader, my egbon, I am your boy, you know, I am your boy. Whatever steps I have taken before now, forgive me. Aluko and myself prostrated again.” Narrating how the meeting was arranged, Olugbemi said; “Before we agreed to meet in Lagos, I first suggested that the meeting should take place in Ekiti State Government House after the wedding of the niece of Governor Fayose but Aluko said he was not too comfortable with the arrangement because of fear that he might be arrested. “I re-assured him that the intention of the meeting was not to arrest, embarrass or humiliate him rather than to reconcile with Governor Fayose, whom he called his mentor. “In the morning Sunday, April 3, we agreed to meet in Lagos and I left Ekiti for Lagos. I got to Lagos at 12 noon; I lodged in a hotel at Magodo Area of Lagos. “At 1 pm, Aluko called me to confirm my hotel room number and I gave it to him. Aluko called me back and promised to be with me within 20 minutes. 15 minutes later, he called me again, and I told him that I was barbing my hair at a salon in Magodo. He asked me to come out of the salon and we met. He came in a blue Ford Sports Utility Van, SUV together with his wife. “I joined them in the car and we drove to my hotel room where Aluko stayed with me till 2 pm. He later instructed me to call the governor to ascertain the time and place of the meeting. “I called the governor, he did not pick the call. I later called Chief of Staff to the governor. The Chief of Staff told me to call either the ADC or CSO to the governor for further directive. The CSO told us that the meeting will take place at the governor’s residence in Magodo at 7.30pm. “I told Aluko but he was not too comfortable with venue of the meeting. He said if the meeting is about reconciliation, it should hold elsewhere and not the governor’s residence. I pleaded with the governor that the meeting should hold elsewhere as demanded by Tope Aluko, which the governor obliged. “All these I was doing because I wanted the crisis to be totally resolved. Immediately we were told of a new venue for the meeting, Aluko left my hotel room for Victoria Island and promised to come back at 7pm. At 7.45pm, Aluko came back to meet me at my Magodo hotel room. At 9pm, I called the governor to inform him of Aluko’s arrival. The governor asked if I was sure Aluko was with me and I said yes. “The governor told to us to come to Eko Hotel and his friend will welcome us and that he would join us later. We drove in Aluko’s car, myself, a woman, a driver and my Personal Assistant. “We got to the Eko Hotel at 9.50pm. We were taken to the Hotel waiting room. Myself, Aluko, ADC, the governor’s friend entered the same lift to the fourth floor of the hotel. “At the hotel room, I pleaded with the governor to forgive and forget about the previous comments and allegations made by Aluko against him since he is father to us all. Aluko interjected and said that I should allow him to lead the talk. “The governor told him to stop fooling himself at 50 and since he allowed himself to be used by the APC at 50, what legacy will he leave for his children? The governor told him that there were going to be reactions to this meeting by the APC and therefore advised Aluko to switch off his phones and rest for at least two weeks to avoid counter allegations. The governor said that the APC will fire back at Aluko because of the money he had received  to malign them.” “Aluko promised the Governor that he will dismantle all the structure he had put in place to attack the Governor. The Governor said he had forgiven him totally and that he should go and sin no more. “The governor told Aluko that he would call soon and that he would need to study him (Aluko) very well within two weeks because he could go out of the meeting and say something different. “The Governor also said it was better to let the press know that he had reconciled with Aluko to which he initially disagreed and later agreed to meet the press with the Governor, and myself, which we did and the video recording is everywhere for the public to see. “On Tuesday April 5, 2016, Aluko called me, sent a text message to me that things were falling apart as the party, and aide of the governor were attacking him. That he would renege on his promise. I advised him not to take any negative action or talk to the press if he wanted his already battered image to be rebuilt. Unfortunately, he did not listen to my advice and having come to deny what he willingly took part in, I have no option than to let the public know the true story.”   … Works commissioner resigns Meantime, the state government yesterday announced the resignation of the  Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Mr Kayode Oso. The announcement was contained in a statement made available in Ado Ekiti by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Modupe Alade. According to the statement, Oso, known to be one of the closest political associates of Governor Ayo Fayose, resigned on health grounds. “Mr Kayode Oso has worked assiduously to add value to this administration going by his effort towards the development of our state. “His letter of resignation has been fully accepted  by His Excellency, Mr Ayo Fayose.

Below are 3 speculated reasons why ridicule would continue on social media..
LOCALITY: It is presumed as a notion by many Nigerians that Indigenes of Ibadan are centuries behind civilization. Especially those who were born, raised and lived their adult life in Ibadan. The environment which breeds their locality have funny names such as Oke-Iho, Oke-Koto, Oke-Ado, Moniya, Sangotedo, Aleshinloye, Challenge, just to mention a few. Of course, if one is not a Yoruba indigene, one would find it herculean pronouncing such names. Now, one would accept the daze of amazement on their faces when SHOPRITE opened one of its stores there.
DIALECT: It is also an acknowledged fact between linguistic scholars that Ibadan indigenes have the most “near-perfect” dialect of the Yoruba language. Obviously, it becomes an albatross for them pronouncing English words or terms without infusing their tonetic rhythm. By this, they end up turning words upside down when talking and by extension, it is to one’s comic relief.
TRIBAL MARKS: This particular prominent feature of these indigenes have been well distorted into different caricatures on social media memes. Noteworthy, it is a fact that tribal marks were given to achieve beauty, in this era and with the rate at which they’ve been trolled, the indigenes don’t see the beauty instead they see the beast in the practice.

However, all these are speculations and have not in anyway affected the warm reception you get from an Ibadan man. Their cab drivers and quite hilarious and would entertain you all the way during your trip. They make you forget the need to have a radio in the car.
