3 million Nigerians lost N18bn to MMM says Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation

Managing Director of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Umaru Ibrahim, says going by the data gathered on social media, about three million Nigerians lost an estimated N18 billion in the failed Ponzi scheme popularly known as Mavrodi Mundial Movement(MMM)

. Umaru stated this through the Deputy Director Corporate Affairs of NDIC, Hadi Suleiman, at the ongoing 38th Kaduna International Trade Fair in Kaduna today.
According to Umaru, despited repeated warnings fom the Central Bank of Nigeria, many Nigerians fell for ponzis like Bitcoin, Ripples, Monero, Litecoin,Dogecoin, Onecoin and lost their money.
"The Phonzi scheme is the phenomenon of illegal fund managers, popularly called "Wonder Banks" which have continued to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of their hard earned money. This phenomenon has been a source for concern because despite our repeated warnings over the years,  some members of the public have continued to fall victims of their fraudulent practices.
We would like to reiterate the fact that these fund managers are illegal as they are neither licences by the CBN to take deposits from members of the public not are those who patronise them covered by the NDIC deposit insurance scheme.  I want to also draw the attention of some cooperative society which often go beyond their primary mandate by accepting contributions from members as cooperative societies are only recognised to mobilise savings from their members. "he said

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has revealed that 5,000 Nigerians are currently into prostitution in different parts of Mali.
Reports from the group said they were forced into prostitution by their traffickers, who had “promised of helping them to Europe.”
The agency said that it has also commenced investigation into the trafficking into Mali of 37 female Nigerians who were on Monday deported to Nigeria by the Malian authorities.
The director-general of NAPTIP, Mr Abdulrazak Dangiri in a statement yesterday directed that investigation on the trafficking of the 37 girls must be thorough.
Speaking to the top management of the agency on the Malian case, he stated that “While the victims are being counseled by NAPTIP Counselors, the suspects are in NAPTIP custody and making usefulN statements.”

Lagos deadly gang leader Small-Jpron escaped from Prison

Two operatives of the Lagos State Command are being detained for their alleged involvement in the release of a suspected serial killer, Ibrahim Balogun aka Small-Jpron.

The 36-year-old, who was notorious for cultism and killings in the Somolu and Bariga areas of Lagos, was said to have escaped from prison with the help of the policemen and other judicial officials at large.

Small-Jpron was earlier arrested in August 2016, and paraded at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, where he confessed his involvement in the killings of three persons.

He had said, “I am an Eiye cult leader. I joined the cult in 2009. The reason for my joining was to avenge the death of a close friend, Sunday Folorunsho, aka Small Biscuit.

“It was the Aiye cult members who killed him. So, the Eiye faction approached me and said I should join them and they would help me fish out the people who killed my friend. I have killed three persons, among whom were Femi Wiper and Lekan Akon.”

Small-Jpron was arraigned at an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court. He disappeared from the public radar afterwards.

Good news is that he was re-arrested on Monday.

Although the suspect insisted that he was granted bail by the court, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, while parading him at the command headquarters on Wednesday, said he escaped from custody in connivance with the two police operatives.

The CP said the policemen, whose names were not disclosed, were under investigation, adding that other persons involved in the suspect’s release would be brought to book.

He said, “The suspect broke out of prison shortly after he was remanded. The circumstances surrounding his escape are being investigated. We are also investigating the complicity of two of our officials in ensuring his escape from the prison.

“We will not leave any stone unturned. Any judicial official found to be involved will also be brought to book.”

In a chat with Punch, Small-Japron, who was said to be the leader of the Eiye Confraternity, stated that he was in the court for the continuation of his trial on the day he was re-arrested.

He explained that the police had brought him and his “second-in-command”, identified simply as Abbey, for arraignment in September 2016, when the latter disappeared.

The suspect claimed that he had denounced his membership of the cult, adding that his “former group” instigated his arrest.

He said, “When I was in prison, a brother in my area called Asuma told me not to worry that he would ensure my release. He is an omoonile (land grabber). He said he would see one justice over my case. I didn’t fight anybody again. I had gone to the court on Monday when policemen arrested me.

“Eiye cult members are fighting me because I told them I was no longer interested in the group. They set me up that day.

“The policemen asked me where Abbey was and I said I didn’t know. They told me that the prosecutor and the IPO (Investigating Police Officer) had been detained and that they wanted to know how he escaped on the first day we were brought to court. I have never jumped bail since I was arraigned in court.”

Investigation is ongoing in the matter.

Malaysia cancels visa-free travel for North Koreans

According to Bernama, Malaysia's state news agency, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that North Koreans would now need to get a visa to travel to the country starting from March 6, 2017.
Malaysian nationals are currently the only people in the world who can enter North Korea without a visa.
The diplomatic row began when North Korea's ambassador to Malaysia, Kang Chol, said the country would reject the results of a "forced" autopsy on one of its citizens and demanded the immediate release of the body.
This is all an aftermath of the death of Kim Jong Nam, the older half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un who was killed on February 13, 2017  before he was supposed to board a flight to the Chinese-controlled territory of Macau.
Two women have been charged with the murder of Kim, who police said was killed by smearing VX, a deadly nerve agent, on his face at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Ri was the only North Korean to have been detained in the case, but investigators have named four North Korean suspects who are believed to be back in Pyongyang.

How Woman Was Killed By A Pastor & His Congegation

A church minister and four members of his congregation have been arrested after a 25-year-old woman allegedly pushed onto a bonfire because she was ‘possessed’ by the devil.

Mum-of-two Vilma Trujillo Garcia, 25, died on Tuesday, five days after being rushed to hospital in the Nicaraguan capital Managua with first degree burns over 80% of her body.

The five suspects , including 23-year-old church minister Juan Gregorio Rocha Romero, were held after Vilma’s grieving husband Reynaldo Peralta claimed she had been stripped naked and tied up next to the bonfire before being pushed on top of it.

The disturbing incident happened in the rural community of El Cortezal in north-eastern Nicaragua.

Mr Rocha Romero, a pastor at the Assemblies of God Church, is claiming the dead woman threw herself on the flames to rid herself of “bad spirits” inside her.

He told a local paper: “God told her he was going to remove that bad spirit from her and asked us to start a fire because that’s where the spirit was going to be expelled.”

Insisting no-one had touched Vilma, he added: “We were praying when we looked at her and saw she was on fire.”

But one of the four alleged accomplices - Eneyda del Socorro Orozco Tellez is said to have told investigators during questioning: “God made a revelation to me.

"He told me to make a bonfire in the church patio and said we should take Vilma and tie up next to the flames and pray so that the devil left her sick body and threw itself on the fire.”

Daily newspaper La Prensa said a police report on the tragedy had concluded the church minister had ordered worshippers to gather up fire wood and start praying for her before his alleged accomplices threw her onto the flames.

Another of the five detainees, Franklin Jarquin Hernandez, told the paper Vilma had been possessed by a ‘bad spirit’ after committing adultery.

He added: “She had her life companion and committed an error with another man and she was claiming to be a Christian and fasting and I’m sure God punished her in that way and she became possessed by the devil.

“It was a bad spirit that pushed her and she fell on the fire.”

Vilma, mum to a boy aged five and a girl aged two, died around 4.30am local time on Tuesday at Antonio Lenin Fonseca Hospital in Managua after five days in an intensive care unit there.

Her husband, speaking shortly before her death, said: “My wife spent eight days prisoner in that congregation and her sister told me that to burn her, they got some fire wood together and then they pushed her naked on the flames.

“She’s got burns on her face, legs and arms and her kidneys and liver have been badly damaged.

“The doctors have told me 80% of her body is affected and they don’t think she’ll pull through.

“I don’t think my wife was possessed at all. What they did to her was witchcraft.”

Claiming she had been raped rather than committing adultery, he added: “I went to confront the man I was told was responsible but had to leave him alone because he was carrying a rifle.”

Disturbing pictures showed Vilma being transferred to hospital with bandages on her face after being rescued barely alive.

The five suspects, branded members of a religious sect by other church leaders, are expected to be formally charged in the coming days after being transferred to Managua by police.

Police said they were treating the case as murder.

A police spokesman, naming the three male and two female suspects aged 23 to 28 at a press conference, said initial investigations pointed to Vilma being kept prisoner in the church from February 15 and thrown on the bonfire earlier than first thought, meaning she may not have received immediate hospital attention.
