Update! Dino Melaye’s name missing from ABU alumni website

The certificate scandal involving the senator representing Kogi West District, Dino Melaye, may be far from over, as his name was not found on the Ahmadu Bello University alumni website.

The senator had claimed that he obtained B.A in Geography from the institution.

But an exhaustive online search from the 1998/1999 alumni set to 2007 – for Melaye’s name on the website of ABU Alumni Association did not give any result that shows that the embattled lawmaker is a graduate of the school.

His name, Daniel Jonah Melaye, as it appeared on a statement of result by the university, when searched, returned with zero result.

When Punch searched for ‘Daniel,’ ‘Jonah’ and ‘Melaye’ separately, different names came up.

A search for ‘Melaye’ brought up only one result: Melaye Sunday Ola (Biology Education), who graduated in 1980.

Another search for ‘Jonah’ came up with four different names: Bawa Jonah Seth Besanhi (BSc Geography; graduated in 1973); Birga Jonah (BSc Geography; graduated in 2007); Kaigama Jonah Ishaku (BSc Geography; graduated in 2011); and Ndasala Jonah (BSc Geography; graduate in 1987).

There were 10 results when ‘Daniel’ was searched: Abin Daniel John (BSc Geography; graduated in 1978); Adamu Kantsan Daniel (Institute Of Education Geography; graduated in 1992); Aniro Daniel Rabo (BSc Geography; no graduation date indicated); Atenji Daniel E. (BSc Geography; graduated in 1986); Beshiru Daniel (BSc Geography; graduated in 1980); Dada Daniel Adefila (BSc Geography; graduated in 1979); Awubra Daniel Akinkwe (Geography; graduated in 2002/2003); Daniel Bosede Biddy (BSc Geography graduated in 1983); Daniel Dogara Garba (BSc Geography; graduated in 2010); and Daniel Ezra Jatau (BSc Geography; graduated in 2011).

When Punch called the ABU Public Relations Officer, Adamu Mohammed, about 8pm on Saturday to find out why the senator’s name was not on the alumni website, his line rang out. On the second trial, the line was switched off.

A text message also sent to his mobile line on the matter had yet to be replied to as of press time.

Contrary to Stephanie's claim, the woman said she had never met with Apostle Suleman.

Update! 'Vampire was an evil child. He killed his classmate during a fight when he was just 12' - Mother

As the people of Umuokpu Umuezeala Abaja Isu in Nwangele Council area of Imo State heave a huge sigh of relief following the death of the most dreaded, vicious and deadly notorious robber and kidnap kingpin, Henry Onyekachi Chibueze, a.k.a Vampire, his distraught mother has described him as an evil child, who had always acted like someone possessed by Agwu (Evil spirit), Daily Sun reports.

It will be recalled that the deadly criminal otherwise known as Vampire was gunned down on March 2, at Umuowa bush in Ikwerre LGA of Rivers State by a combined Inspector General of Police Special Response Team from the Rivers State Police Command and Imo State Police Command.
Vampire who was born in 1981 to the family of late Chief Emmanuel Chibueze had been acting as if he was possessed with an evil spirit and had become a terror in the community since a tender age.
Before he acquired national and international notoriety, he had committed his first murder when he was just 12 years old during a fight with his fellow pupil, while still in primary five at Umuokpu Community Primary School. It was learnt that he ended his formal education in primary five after the murder incident for which his late father had to pay compensation to the family of the victim. After dropping out of school, he refused to learn any trade, but rather joined some undesirable elements called hunters from the  neighboring community who smoked marijuana and engaged in stealing people’s goats and fowls, which they either sold or killed and ate. It was also  gathered  that Vampire later started a commercial motorcycle business  on a hire purchase basis, operating  around Isu and Anara in Isiala Mbano mostly at night, returning to the village in the early hours of the morning.

His mother, Mrs Beatrice Chibueze who spoke to Saturday Sun in their village, said Vampire was an evil child as all efforts by his late father to ensure that he became a responsible person proved abortive.

“Henry Onyekachi Chibueze was born in 1981. My late husband had enrolled him at the Community School Umuokpu in Abaja, but he had to drop out at primary five after he killed his classmate during a fight at school and he was just 12 years old . That incident caused the family a lot of problem and my late husband had to pay compensation to the family of the boy before the matter was resolved. Henry had always acted like somebody who was possessed by Agwu (Evil spirit) and at a time the family had  thought of making a sacrifice to the gods of the land to see if that could make him act responsibly”, she revealed.

According to her, “when he dropped out from primary school he refused to learn any vocational skill, but had instead joined some bad boys in the community where he started this armed robbery and kidnapping. Even though our family is a polygamous one, my late husband had ensured that all his children were educated, but it was only my son who refused to be useful like his other brothers and sisters. In fact, it was the disgrace and shame brought to the family that led to the death of my late husband, who developed hypertension and died eventually.”

Mrs. Chibueze further disclosed that at the height of Vampire’s criminal exploits, members of the family including herself ran away from the village because he was prepared to kill anybody and that before he was arrested in 2015, he had destroyed the roof of his father’s house when he visited the village.

She, however, has an appeal to the police to release the two children of the late Vampire: Masters  Onyekachi  Chibueze and Ezinne Chibuzo Chibueze who had been in the custody of the police since, adding that the kids were innocent of the crimes their father committed.

Step mum reacts
Also speaking with Saturday Sun, Vampire’s stepmother Mrs. Francisca Chibueze, disclosed that he was too strong headed even as a child and did whatever he wanted regardless of what anybody said. She said that the late father who was a respected man in the community did everything within his powers to ensure that he was useful to himself ,but to no avail.

Onyekachi was a very stubborn child, he was always fighting in the community and he was the only child in the family who had refused to go to school or to even learn a trade and my late husband who was his father had done everything to ensure that he was useful to himself, but that failed . It was his criminal activities that led to his father developing high blood pressure that led to his death two years ago. “I had myself advised him severally to emulate his other brothers and sisters who are the pride of the family, while he was still younger before he became a big criminal and brought disgrace to the entire family and community”

Community, youth leaders express relief
Speaking in the same vein,  the chairman of the community, Mr. Obilo John, said that the death of Vampire was a great relief to the people of the community as he did not only bring the name of his family but that of the entire community to shame and disrepute.
The community leader said that Vampire was a bloodthirsty person as he had also killed one of his best friends who was popularly known as MC General of Abaja over a minor misunderstanding before he acquired the unenviable status of a notorious kidnapper.
“The eventual death of this boy who calls himself Vampire is a big relief to the community as every body is happy because of the bad name and disgrace his criminal activities brought to the community. Before the Police killed him, whenever he came to the village, people of the community would flee because he could kill at the slightest provocation. Henry had killed one of his best friends who was popularly known MC General and he had even killed his fellow pupil during a fight, while he was just 12 years old. I think that the boy must be possessed, because for him to have killed the number of people he had killed means that he was not a normal human being.

“The entire community now has resolved that henceforth any of its sons who is discovered to be delinquent would be dealt with immediately as the community does not want another Vampire who had destroyed the image of the community. We have also decided that any stranger who comes to the community will be monitored as well as who the stranger had come to see”
Also, one of the youth leaders in the community, Michael  Ibekwe, said that the people of the community were made a laughing stock because of the criminal activities of Vampire, as they were often referred to as community of criminals.

“We are happy that he was killed, because  people of  this community were being described as criminals as a result of Vampire and we have also decided that anybody who tries to emulate bad behaviour of Vampire would be severely dealt with because the good name of the community was damaged severely, and it would take several years to repair, just because of the activities of one misguided person who thought that the only way to make money is by kidnapping, armed robbery and killing his victims”

Update! Real reason Kemi Olunloyo’s bail application was stalled

The absence of a magistrate, Alatuwo Fubara, at the Port Harcourt Magistrate’s Court on Thursday stalled the hearing on bail application of a blogger, Kemi Olunloyo, and a Port Harcourt-based publisher, Samuel Walson.
Olunloyo, the daughter of a former Governor of Oyo State, Omololu Olunloyo, and Walson were arrested for allegedly publishing materials believed to have defamed a frontline cleric, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, of the Salvation Ministries in Port Harcourt.
According to Punch, though they were expected to appear in court in the morning, it was gathered that the absence of Fubara, who was expected to preside over the matter caused them to stay back in prison.
The magistrate was said to be unable to come to the court as a result of ill health.
While the duo’s lawyers and counsel for Salvation Ministries were present at the court, majority of those at the magistrate court were journalists and bloggers, who came to cover the hearing and also showed solidarity with their colleagues.
Olunloyo was arrested in Lagos, while Walson was apprehended in Port Harcourt. They were remanded in the Port Harcourt Prison.
Some of their friends told journalists that the suspects were currently having health challenges.
The court, however, fixed March 30, 2017, for hearing on the bail application of the journalists.

NDLEA Arrests Drug Dealers With N183m Cannabis

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two suspected cannabis barons while also seizing 18,294kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of N183m.

One of the suspects, a Bauchi-based suspected cannabis dealer, Mohammed Mustapha was apprehended at Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State where he was facilitating the shipment of 7,272kg of cannabis to Bauchi State.

According to the spokesperson for the agency, another 3,072kg of cannabis was traced to the warehouse of another suspected dealer, Lucky Akele at Uzebba. About 7,950kg of cannabis with few bags of cement used as cover inside a Dangote cement truck were intercepted at Enweh area of the state. The truck driver, Zegiru Amadu, said the shipment was destined for Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Edo State commander of the NDLEA, Wakawa Buba, said that the 18,294kg of cannabis were seized in three operations.

“All the cases are under investigation and the suspects will soon be charged to court for unlawful possession and dealing in cannabis. They risk a minimum of fifteen years sentence if found guilty,” Wakawa said.

The Dangote trailer driver in his statement said he was given N1.3m to transport the cannabis to Maiduguri, Borno State.

Amadu claimed that poverty pushed him to take the money and agree to the deal.

Commending the officers involved in the operations, NDLEA Chairman, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd.) described the seizure as a necessary step in reducing drugs from circulation.

Abdallah said, “The NDLEA will continue to work assiduously by consolidating on the gains recorded in the fight against insurgency.

“Over 15 tons of cannabis would have been taken to the North East if not for the timely interception. Several crimes are perpetrated under the influence of drugs like cannabis and the agency will not rest until the problem of cannabis cultivation, trafficking and use is drastically reduced.”

Update! I Asked Davido To Wear Condom Before S*x But He Refused – Alleged Babymama

In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, mother of one, Ayomide Labinjo, had alleged that pop singer, Davido, is the father of her three-year-old child, Anuoluwapo.

In another exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, Ayomide said they would not have been in this paternity mess, “if only Davido had listened to me and worn a condom.”

When asked why she would allow anybody to have unprotected s*x with her, Ayomide alleged that the singer was not a fan of wearing condoms during s*x as she recounted in details what allegedly transpired the two times she alleged they had s*x.

The young lady claimed, “The reason I slept with him the first time we met was because I just wanted to catch my fun. The day we met at the club, Ebevande, I was with my friends, I did not really know him then but I just knew he was an artiste. I went out with my female friends; we had like a ladies night out; then one of his bouncers came to meet me and told me that his boss wanted to see me. I actually thought it was the owner of the club that wanted to see me.

"When I got to where they were, I noticed that it was David and he was with B. Red. I greeted both of them, B. Red did not respond but David did and we talked. He collected my pin and asked me to return to my seat. When they were about to leave, the bouncer came to meet me again and informed me that they wanted to leave. My friends thought we were all going together but when we all got to the car, he asked my friends to go back. He said that I was the one he wanted to see.

“We went to the Genesis Hotel. When we got to the room, we talked for a long while before we had s*x. He is a very jovial person and he loves talking. He made me laugh a lot and we talked at length. B. Red was in the other room. I insisted that he should protect himself by wearing a condom before s*x but he refused. He said that he does HIV test every two weeks. Then I asked him how sure he was that I did not have any disease but he said he was very sure I did not have a disease.

"After he had said all that, I told him to just do what he wanted to do and allow me go home in the morning. That night, he had s*x with me twice. You would know he was in the mood to have s*x that night and it lasted for a while. He has a big manhood and it hurt me a little. The second time was when he noticed I was leaving in the morning and he just wanted to have s*x with me again.

“The second time, the s*x did not last long because he was very tired and he did not even know when I left the hotel. I do not drink or smoke but David drinks and smokes. He drank and smoked in the club,” she alleged.

Labinjo told Saturday Beats that she was shocked that Davido said he gave her money as she claimed she had never received a dime from the singer since they met. In her words, she described the self-acclaimed Omo Baba Olowo as “a very stingy person.”

“I saw where he said he sent money to my family and that is a lie. The question I would ask is that what account did he pay the money into? He should bring out the bank teller. He has never given me money. If they said they have given me money, there would be a record or evidence and they should bring it out. Even when we had s*x, he never gave me money for transport. David is a very stingy person and I would not be the first person saying this. I have heard it from different girls, David is very stingy,” she said.

When asked if she was certain that the pop star is the father of her child, she answered in the affirmative. She claimed as of the time they met, she did not have a boyfriend and she is not one to jump from one bed to another.

Labinjo said, “I am very sure he is the father of my child because I did not have a boyfriend when we met. I had some male friends but it was just a platonic relationship I had with them and nothing serious. I don’t jump from one bed to another and that is why I am very bold and certain that he is the father of my child. If I had been sleeping around, I would not be that bold to talk.”
She was quick to add that all she wanted was for the singer to step forward for another DNA test. Labinjo said that even if the result shows that Davido is the father of her child, she doubts mutual love would co-exist between them because of the way he has treated her all these years.

The mother of one also hinted that the matter may soon be taken to court.

“I just want him to take up his responsibility but I heard he is not ready for another DNA. My mother has gone to a lawyer and we would eventually go to court because I know we have a good case. I was told that even if David does not want to step out for a DNA, any of his siblings could step in for him. Once everything is settled, I just want him to take care of his daughter but there cannot be mutual love between us. Even the way he talks to me cannot allow for mutual love.”

I Was Introduced To Crime By Those Who Duped Me

A fraudster paraded by Abia State Police Command has confessed that he was once a victim of fraud, adding that the people that defrauded him later introduced him to the crime.

The suspect identified as Nwokacha Lucky and his accomplice Rekiyat Sunday were arrested on Owerri by Kaduna Street in Umuahia, the state capital following a distress call put across to police operatives at the Central Police Station, Umuahia.

It was learnt that Lucky and Rekiyat were members of a 419 syndicate, who specialised in picking unsuspecting passengers to unknown destinations to defraud and rob them of their belongings.

The state's Commissioner of Police, Adeleye Oyebade, who paraded the suspects at the Command headquarters in Umuahia, told Southern City News that the hoodlums were intercepted by the mob while attempting to pick an unsuspecting victim in the state capital.

He said the suspects had confessed to the crime, while their victims had surfaced and identified them.

He added that one Volkswagen Vento saloon car with Registration No. PBT 422 DT was recovered from the suspects and added that investigation was still ongoing to fish out other members of the syndicate.

Responding to questions from our correspondent, Lucky said he became a fraudster over two years ago after he was duped by some members of the syndicate while embarking on a journey.

He said, “I was duped by some fraudsters while on a journey. Later, I saw one of them and identified him. When I wanted to report him to the police, he asked me to calm down and told me to join them in the business in order to recover my money. That was why I joined them. But I had not been lucky with this business before my arrest.”

On her part, Rekiyat said her duty was to sit in the car, adding that after an unsuspecting passenger entered the car, she would introduce a discussion about certain amount of money she allegedly took away from her master, which she would want all the passengers to share with her.

The widow, who claims the death of her husband led her into the nefarious act, said, “If the passenger we want to dupe develops interest in sharing the money with us, one of us will suggest that we should visit a pastor who will pray for the money before we share it.

“When we get to the pastor’s house, he will then tell us to bring money to pay him before he will pray for the money. At that point, we will tell our victim to bring his/her money, phones and other belongings for us to sell and raise the money to pay for the prayer.”

Update! The Pressure that pushed Lagos doctor into suicide

*Colleagues recall his last day at work
Fresh insights have emerged as to why Allwell Orji, a 35-year-old medical doctor with the Papa Ajao branch of Mount Sinai Hospital, decided to take his own life by jumping into the lagoon in Lagos last Sunday.

A close associate of the deceased doctor told The Nation that he (Orji) once confided in him that he was fed up with life and “wanted to end it all.”

He said: “We were close and we often discussed about his life. He was a brilliant young man and he liked helping people. He was in the habit of taking part in free medical outreaches and he loved to study.

“Despite his condition, he was still studying further. He ought to be rounding off his post-graduate studies which would have enabled him to become a consultant,” the young associate said.

Although it was gathered that the deceased medical practitioner was a sickle cell anaemia carrier, the associate, who pleaded not to be named, said the deceased doctor sometimes had moments of mental instability.

The young man added: “Sometimes it happened like a convulsion, and it even embarrassed him at his place of work while he was busy with a patient. Although the family did their best to manage the situation, there were times when he and some members of the family exchanged words because they taunted him for acting abnormally.

“His frustration heightened when his father died about four years ago and some family members believed the burden of his health condition contributed to the father’s death. These were some of the reasons he told me at that time that he wanted to end it all, but I tried to encourage him with the word of God”.

The close ally also said that the late doctor’s mother had tried to get him a wife but it did not work out. He said the mum, a wealthy woman who owns a number of vehicles, also hired a driver for the doctor as a way of monitoring his movement to prevent him from taking his own life since he had exhibited such tendencies.

“The jeep (SUV) he was riding belongs to the mother and she also got him a driver to take him around. The mother tried to arrange marriage for him at a time but it did not work. The deceased’s younger brother is already married and his sister is also a medical doctor,” the source said.

When one of our correspondents visited the Odunukan residence of the deceased on Thursday evening, a sober atmosphere pervaded the entire street. One of the residents, who identified himself simply as Mr. Oluwole, recalled that Oluwole had attempted suicide about four years earlier, adding that he saw Dr. Orji walking past the Saturday before his death.

Oluwole said: “We were here four years ago when he wanted to jump from the top of the storey building owned by his family. His family members do not relate with other people in the neigbourhood, and it was the same thing with the late doctor. I often saw him walking on the streets bespectacled on days he was not on call at the hospital. He walked like someone who was thinking too much.”

Oluwole also believed that things could have turned out differently if the deceased doctor’s family had not changed his driver.

He said: “It won’t be out of place to describe him as a recluse. He was not on the social media, neither did he engage in any social activity.

“I believe things would have turned out differently if the family did not change his former driver. The former driver would have suspected and could have tried to stop him once he ordered him to stop on the bridge. I am not sure his new driver was well briefed on his medical condition.”

Colleagues recall last day at work
It was just like any other Friday when the late Orji resumed work at the branch of Mount Sinai Hospital on Ojekunle Road, Papa Ajao, Mushin, on March 17. The storey building housing the hospital overlooks the dual carriage road that is popular for the spill-over of heavy commercial activities from the nearby Ladipo Market. Although it is sandwiched by two very close buildings, Mount Sinai Hospital wears a bright colour that makes it easily noticeable.

It was here that Orji reported last for duty as a medical doctor before he gave it all up two days later on a bright Sunday afternoon. He was said to have stopped his driver on the Third Mainland Bridge, got out of the vehicle and jumped into the Lagos lagoon.

A colleague of the deceased, who did not want to be named, said that Orji’s last day at work was like every other.

He said: “He was cheerful on that day and attended to patients in his usual cheerful manner. There was no slightest indication that something was amiss or anything to indicate that he was depressed or bothered by something. If there was any sign, it was not obvious at all. If there was anything amiss, that would be his personal life which, of course, we couldn’t have been part of,” the colleague said.

A nurse at the hospital, who fought back tears as she spoke, also described the deceased Orji as a cheerful individual. “Everybody here will miss him. He was a jovial person. He loved his work. He was someone we enjoyed working with. That Friday was his last day at work here,” she added.

One of the doctors, who appeared shocked by the incident, referred our correspondent to the Communications Manager at the Surulere branch of the hospital. “It is the Communications Manager who has the mandate to say anything about the late Orji. I am sure that the hospital will communicate an official position about the incident in due course,” the doctor said.

At the Surulere branch of the hospital in Lagos, however, the Communications Manager was not available to speak with reporters. But an official of the hospital who would not disclose his name said that while he shared the sense of loss, he would not answer questions concerning Orji’s personal life.

He said: “As for his official life here, I can tell you that he didn’t show any sign that he had any issue whatsoever. He was at work on the Friday before the incident. He was a likeable fellow, cheerful, had a good working relationship with his colleagues and he was well remunerated. If he had personal problems, I wouldn’t know. It didn’t show.”

A psychologist, Dr. Okonkwo Leo, said, "Suicide also could be caused by hearing voices, hallucination. What I can advise at this point is that in whatever ways we can, we should help people who seem depressed. Give them more ears, listen to them, talk to them and encourage them. Deep depression needs to be treated too.”

Lobatan! 'Snow' Falls In Ekiti

There was excitement in Ado Ekiti on Saturday as snows fell from the sky during a rain which began around 4 p.m. The residents, mostly students of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, and the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, took snapshots of the white solid substance.

A Punch correspondent, who was a witness, observed the excitement that greeted the incident as many of the residents rushed outside to catch a glimpse of the rare occurrence. The rain lasted for barely 40 mins.

Ireoluwa Akinyemi, a fresh graduate of EKSU said it was a refreshed experience for him.
“I have not seen snow in this magnitude before, I’m really excited. It is a lovely experience.”
Another neighbour, Kemi Fadairo, said the size of the snow was the biggest she had seen.

“I have been seeing snows fall but these are the biggest I have seen,” she said.

The rain started by stoning doors with the snow, first causing apprehension among residents, who peeped through their windows to observe if it was an intruder.

“We thought it was somebody playing pranks, so we peeped through the window to see who it was to know whether to shout for help.

“It was then we discovered it was snow falling from the sky and hitting the door hard. I also joined in taking photographs,” said Olawale Hafeez, a Laboratory Technologist.
